Why I strongly recommend a makeup artist

Even if you're a woman who considers herself to be great at makeup, the type of makeup required for head shots is entirely different than what you're used to doing for every day. The lighting used whether a natural light reflector or filler lighting will either wash you out or create certain shadows that your every day makeup application won't account for. A makeup artist knows how to work with the light and your face to give you the look that fits not only the type of roles you'd play, but the type of photo (ie. commercial shots tend to be lighter makeup and theatrical have a more dramatic eye). Also, shooting digitally picks up everything, and what you don't spend on a makeup artist, will be spent on photo retouching which can be a much more timely process, thus more expensive than what a makeup artist would have initially cost you. Additionally, the makeup artist is a huge asset throughout the shoot. From touching up shine or makeup melt down to fixing lipstick that may have bled, or helping with hair fly-aways and wardrobe fixes, all of these minor details when not looked after can easily ruin a shot. Lastly, and I think it's an important point to make: if you're deciding to work with a photographer based off of his or her gallery, nearly all of the photos selected for their online portfolio will have been shot with a makeup artist, so you may be a bit disappointed if you decide to forgo using one having expected a "certain look" that a makeup artist plays a large role in creating.
